AIP/Paleo: Lifestyle not Diet

It takes time to read and research, digest and consider and then take the steps to implement lifestyle changes related to the Paleo Approach and AIP, so I am doing what I can as I have time.

I know that I want to review ingredients in the diminishing number of body care products I use and switch some things out. It will have to happen in steps though.

One step I have taken is diminishing my excessive use of lip balm products and eliminating the use of any of these pictured, most of which market themselves to be “natural.”

A glance at the ingredients of the six lip products pictured shows (from L to R):

Lip Sh*t: 8 ingredients, most of which seem fine: Coconut Oil, Sunflower Oil (seeds though), Beeswax, Lanolin, Vitamin E, Organic Comfrey Leaf Extract, Rosemary Extract (what, they couldn’t find organic rosemary?). But “flavor”?… Nah. Code word.

Savannah’s Meadow/Lavender & Mint: 12 ingredients, the first of which is not allowed on AIP: Soybean Oil. Nor the other two oils Sunflower and Hemp. The other ingredients seem fairly benign.

Avalon Organics/Vitamin C Renewal Soothing Lip Balm: Somewhere in the neighborhood of 21 ingredients, including many that are not friendly to AIP: Rice Bran Wax, Stevia Leaf Extract, Soybean Oil, Sunflower Oil along with 8 or so ingredients that I’m too lazy to investigate further: Squalene*? and that “Flavor” again. [*Shark Liver Oil]

Zumbo Kiss/Shea Butter Lip Balm: 10 ingredients, 4 or so of which are AIP unfriendly: Grapeseed Oil, Stevia, Sunflower Oil, maybe Honey.

Burt’s Bees Ultra Conditioning Lip Balm with Kokum Butter: somewhere in the neighborhood of 26 ingredients, the label has a peel-back feature so all the ingredients can be listed. Most of them might be fine, but there is Soybean Oil and Soybean Glycerides, and I don’t know what Benzyl Benzoate is and since I already know this one doesn’t pass the AIP-friendly test, I’m not going to bother finding out. Wait, I changed my mind and looked here. Benzyl Benzoate is a solvent, preservative and ENDOCRINE DISRUPTER!… “Possible human immune system toxicant or allergen.” <<SAD FACE>> This is a product that markets itself to be “100% NATURAL.” This is what I think of that.

Burt’s Bees/Tinted Lip Balm: Something in the 20-22 ingredients range including Soybean Oil, Sunflower Oil and Flavor. Let me look up this one that doesn’t look good just looking at the ingredient list: ammonium glycyrhizinate. Can’t find much without digging more than I am in the mood to. Looks like it is some kind of sweetener.

(*BTW Burt’s Bees is owned by Clorox.)

The amount of Shea Butter on my thumbnail is what I call a smidge, and that is now the total quantity of lip product I use once every few days.

So with the easing of symptoms from following The Paleo Approach and AIP, I no longer have the ceaseless lip dryness I used to have, and I am getting by fine with only applying a smidge of single ingredient Shea Butter once every few days.

One ingredient: Handcrafted, fair trade Shea Butter

Maybe down the road I will decide I need/want to carry a small container of lip balm around. I could buy this natural lip balm or experiment with making some on my own out of tallow. Easier though would be cleaning out the little metal tin from Lip Sh*t and putting some shea butter in it. It probably would not be very RA hands friendly, but perhaps manageable for those occasional smidges of lip balm application while away from home.
